The owner of this historic Boston-area home sought a fully professional, modern kitchen that would complement the traditional character of the house.
This resulting bright and happy room features warm, welcoming natural oak finishes, brushed stainless steel countertops, and frosted glass in tall wall units that play with the plentiful natural light captured by windows facing into the room from all sides.
The sleek powerful hood over the island top range creates an elegant streamlined statement, while an existing antique stove, incorporated into the new design, presents a charming reminder of the room’s long history as a culinary workshop.
The kitchen naturally invites gathering, thanks to two highly functional, centrally located island stations that facilitate the sharing of prep, cooking, and clean-up activities. A natural oak table fits perfectly between the two islands, to be used as an additional workstation or for casual dining. The lightweight table can be easily moved to an adjacent wall, allowing unimpeded flow around the two islands when necessary.
Comfort is a key theme of the room’s successful design, with ergonomic placement of elements like the oven, set within arms length of the prep area in one of the room’s four tall wall units. A similarly placed shutter unit offers handy storage for appliances. The room’s meticulous design also allows for tremendous storage within deep drawers and numerous cabinets, while maintaining an open and spacious feeling. |
