DESIGN FOR LIVING
Winner: Gold Award, 2007 Builders Association of Greater Boston Prism Award: Best Kitchen Over $100,000 The owners of this suburban home had planned to simply update their kitchen with modern cabinetry and appliances. Ultimately, they embraced an inventive contemporary design concept that accommodates all of their needs.
The hub of this contemporary concept for living is the working kitchen, which opens to the bar and formal dining area at one side, and the casual dining and office space at the other. The centered location of the kitchen’s cooking area—featuring two Wolf 15” induction cook tops and a 15” Wolf gas wok-burner cook top —defines layout and flow. A stainless steel back panel and sleek 48” stainless steel Gaggenau hood is framed by two existing windows and light, open aluminum shelving. Beneath warm granite countertop, 48” deep drawers offer ample storage necessary for the homeowners’ adherence to kosher restrictions.
Two functionally defined islands are centrally located. The island near the bar area is designated for cleanup, with dishwasher, sink, and storage for glassware beneath. The second island features a prep-sink and is just steps from the casual dining area, allowing everyone to participate in the cooking ritual.
A 36” Wolf/Sub-Zero refrigerator is placed opposite the cook top—equidistant to the two islands—within a handsome natural oak tall unit, which also features a 24” Miele speed oven and a 24” Miele steam oven and a 36” shutter unit used for small appliances, including a coffee maker. The tall unit composition also houses smartly positioned custom double 30” Miele oven, 27” Sub-Zero wine cooler, pantry, and refrigerator drawers.
Displaying jaw-dropping beauty and elegance, this working kitchen becomes the star player in an interconnected, fully contemporary and well-considered design for living. |
