Space-efficient. Functional. Dynamic. Designed within an existing Cambridge condominium where space is highly limited, the challenges toward providing a fully functional kitchen were significant.
Boasting much more than meets the eye
Every inch of the space is maximized; from pull-out cutlery drawers mounted seamlessly under countertops to a knob-less cook top which doubles as a prep area. Several innovative elements are utilized, including an integrated dish-drainer and a stainless steel hood and backsplash to provide emphasis to the kitchen’s major activity centers.
Designed on two axes, the kitchen offers delineated cooking and clean-up areas, with each defined by a signature material, stainless steel and glass. To promote an expansive feeling in the small space, all key functions are located below the countertops. The double sink and undersink base unit contain a garbage disposal, water purifier, instant hot and cool water, and soap dispenser. The small space between the sink and cooktop accommodates a high-tech efficient corner unit, a recycle trash bin recessed in the counter, and a chopping board designed to fit within one millimeter in the only space available. Storage and shelving above are carefully designed so that the area is not top-heavy. A utensil rail runs across both axes, freeing the countertop of clutter. At the left end of the sink countertop, a recessed shutter unit houses small appliances allowing surfaces to remain uncluttered and readily available for the serious chef. The white lacquered cabinetry brings lightness to the confined space while a stainless steel countertop with welded sink provides durability, superior hygiene and smooth lines. Stainless steel defines the third important area of this small kitchen, where a 36” refrigerator and 30” wall oven located under the counter complete the needs of professional cooking.
All the needs of a professional kitchen are accommodated in a small 9’ x 9’-6” space, resulting in an uplifting, highly efficient space where critical activities are achieved within only a few footsteps.
