This kitchen in Lincoln, Massachusetts combines a unique blend of dark and light materials that reflect tone and light deep within the house.
This exceptional space accommodates all the culinary needs of the most dedicated chef with an exquisite and luxurious design. At the heart of the kitchen, the island distinguishes the space into two zones: one for circulation and casual dining and the other for the prep and clean-up areas. Accommodating storage underneath, an expansive 5-burner cooktop, oven, and a deep stainless steel basin, the island provides an abundance of worktop surface for food preparation and for informal dining that encourages guests to participate in the dynamic of cooking. A stainless steel hood floats above the cooktop and reaches towards the tall ceiling, calling attention to the dramatic sloping roof forms of the house. Delicately proportioned stainless steel shelves at both ends of the island resolve the island composition by softening its form and supplying an ample library of recipes.
The clean-up area sits beyond the island and includes a large 42” Sub-Zero refrigerator and a 30” double-sink, which foster efficient movement between the refrigerator to the island workspace and the range and the sink. A series of base units and tall units serve as the primary kitchen storage areas and are finished in teak wood that complement the red facing wall and the dark wood floors. The wood cabinets and floors, along with the dark marble countertops, provide a perfect cushion for the flood of light to rest upon. The dishwasher is located adjacent to the double-sink and further delineates the two major activities of the kitchen: cooking and cleaning. At the end of the worktop surface, an innovative roller-shutter unit and open shelving unit lead into the pantry area from the clean-up and prep areas and house the kitchen’s loose appliances, allowing the option to conceal or display the inter-workings of the kitchen.
