ARCLINEA BOSTON WINS SUB-ZERO/WOLF KITCHEN DESIGN CONTEST
Chestnut Hill kitchen named regional winner, advances to national competition

BOSTON [February 24, 2006] —Arclinea Boston has been named a regional winner in the 2004/5 Sub-Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Contest for a kitchen it designed in Chestnut Hill, MA.

“There were nearly 1,050 entries in this year’s contest,” says James J. Bakke, president and CEO of Sub-Zero/Wolf. “The selection of this kitchen is in recognition of excellent design work.”

The kitchen was designed by Arclinea Boston architect Mercedes Farrando, who worked closely with the homeowner and with interior designer Fran Silverman. Installation was coordinated with contractor Scott Depot of D. Thomas Scott, Inc.

“Arclinea addressed this project with innovative solutions that really maximized the functionality of the space,” says Silverman. “What I see in their approach is a remarkable thoughtfulness—from the original concept developed in Italy to the meticulous customization by Mercedes and the team in Boston. As a designer, I’ve never encountered that level of commitment.”

Farrando began her work by understanding the specific needs of the homeowner.

“This client is passionate about baking and cooking, and she requested that those activities be central to the renovation of her kitchen,” Farrando explains. “I began my design of the space by making the Wolf 48” dual-fuel double oven and grill the kitchen’s protagonist.”

“Working with Arclinea to design our kitchen was a terrific experience,” says the homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous. “In my view, the end result is a perfect blending of function and beauty.”

The award-winning design places a Wolf double oven center stage between two windows and flanked by abundant countertop workspace. Support is provided from base units built with matching proportions and a continuous line of ergonomically-placed drawers supporting the tools for serious cooking—pots and pans, utensils, and cutlery.

A multifunctional island streamlines the client’s processes in the kitchen. At one end of the island are two Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers, a 700BR and a 36” Sub-Zero 736 refrigerator, which allow for quick, efficient movement from the refrigerator to the island workspace, the range, and the sink.

The dishwasher is placed on the other side of the island to delineate the two major activities of the kitchen, cooking and cleaning. A large worktop surface on the island used for baking preparation also offers a sitting area for four, allowing family members to share the enjoyment of cooking and dining.

A café lacquered finish was selected to contrast the bold statement of functionality given by the red knobbed Wolf range. Light horizontally grained natural oak on the side of the island is a bright accent mirroring the wood used for the open shelving in the kitchen, the telephone station, and in the informal dining space. The selection of wood for each of these functions is inspired by the wood design element demonstrated throughout the home. Caesar stone counter tops bring additional lightness to the overall composition.

“The goal was to insure not only that the kitchen be a highly-functional workspace, but that the space and all of its components flow harmoniously with the floor, walls, furniture, and the spirit of the house,” says Arclinea Boston owner Philip Guarino. “It is fantastic to have our hard work recognized by the judges at Sub-Zero/Wolf in this way.”

As regional winners, Farrando and Guarino will travel to Palm Beach, Florida in March, where a ceremony will be held to name a national winner at The Breakers Hotel.
