BOSTON [March 24, 2006] —A kitchen in Lincoln, MA, designed by Arclinea Boston senior project manager Mercedes Farrando, is a winner in Boston Magazine’s Home & Garden’s first annual Dream Kitchen contest.
The kitchen—one of two celebrated in the contemporary design category—will be featured in the Boston Magazine’s Home & Garden summer issue, on area newsstands June 13.
“We were looking for kitchens that are both inspiring and personal,” says Boston Magazine’s Home & Garden executive editor Emily McManus, “kitchens that our judges could imagine themselves cooking in—and that could inspire our readers in their own kitchens.”
The Arclinea kitchen was custom-designed to accommodate all the culinary needs of the most dedicated chef with an exquisite and luxurious design. Both light and dark materials were used to reflect tone and light deep within the house.
At the heart of the kitchen, Farrando placed a highly functional island defining two distinct zones: one for circulation and casual dining and the other for the prep and clean-up areas. The island also features an expansive 5-burner cooktop, oven, deep stainless steel basin, and generous storage. An abundance of worktop surface for food preparation and informal dining encourages guests to participate in the pleasure of cooking.
A stainless steel hood floats above the cooktop and reaches toward the tall ceiling, calling attention to the dramatic sloping roof forms of the house. Delicately proportioned stainless steel shelves at both ends of the island resolve the island composition by softening its form and supplying an ample library of recipes.
A large 42” Sub-Zero refrigerator, a dishwasher, and a 30” double-sink are placed to foster efficient movement between workspace, appliances, and clean-up area. A series of base units and tall units serve as the primary kitchen storage areas and are finished in teak wood that complement the red facing wall and the dark wood floors. The wood cabinet and floors, along with the dark marble countertops, provide a perfect cushion for the flood of light to rest upon. At the end of the worktop surface, Farrando designed an innovative roller-shutter and shelving unit to house the kitchen’s loose appliances, allowing the option to conceal or display the inter-workings of the kitchen.
“This kitchen perfectly demonstrates the Arclinea approach: providing state-of-the-art functionality and exquisite materials that complement the overall home design, all meticulously customized to meet the personal needs of the client,” says Arclinea Boston president Philip Guarino. “We’re very happy that our work has been recognized by Boston Magazine’s Home & Garden and we look forward to sharing this project with its readers.”Arclinea Boston is the first flagship showroom in the United States for Arclinea—an industry leader in the manufacturing of luxury, contemporary kitchens, designed and coordinated by the acclaimed Italian architect Antonio Citterio.
