BOSTON [April 10, 2006] — On Wednesday, May 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., Arclinea Boston will kick off the Contemporary Design Forum, an ongoing series of salon-style conversations spotlighting local architecture and design challenges and innovative solutions.
“Architects and designers working in the Boston area face a specific challenge: successfully envisioning and incorporating contemporary design within very historic or traditional forms,” says Arclinea Boston owner Philip Guarino. “We hope that this forum will demonstrate some exciting solutions and opportunities.”
At the May 3 event, Brad Walker of Ruhl Walker Architects and Stephen Chung of Urbanica will engage participants at the Arclinea Boston showroom, 10 St. James Avenue in the Design District, in a discussion ranging from aesthetic concerns to preservation and zoning issues. Architects and architects-in-training who attend will receive 1.5 AIA continuing education credits. A selection of Italian wines and cheeses will also be provided.
“Stephen and Brad are well respected in Boston and beyond for their dynamic contemporary designs,” adds Guarino. “We’ve enjoyed collaborating with them on past projects, and are thrilled that they have agreed to lead this first session.”
Chung, AIA, is the Design Director of Urbanica, a Boston firm specializing in Design/Development. He is also the principal of moda Architects, an architecture office which focuses on high-end modern design. Before co-founding moda Architects, Chung practiced with many distinguished firms including Richard Meier and Partners in New York and Machado Silvetti Associates in Boston. He has taught design and drawing at several institutions, including Syracuse, Cornell, Rhode Island School of Design, University of Texas at Austin, and Yale University. Chung received his architectural degree from Harvard.
Walker, AIA, is a principal at Ruhl Walker Architects, which he founded in 1996 with William T. Ruhl. The firm specializes in design-oriented architecture, with projects including everything from product and furniture design to residential, commercial, and institutional projects of various sizes and budgets. A graduate of Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Walker has taught there as well as at Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams College, and Boston Architectural Center.
